Something Weird Video releases another pair of forgotten drive-in classics on this DVD, this time two films which actually made the rounds together as a double feature in the early '70s.
Bloodsuckers is an erotic vampire tale that reflects its period with charming psychedelic touches; the black-and-white Filipino feature
Blood Thirst mixes the
horror and private eye genres with suitably tawdry results. As is par for the course with
Something Weird reissues, the fidelity of image isn't pristine, though the sound and picture are above average for their library (consisting mainly of obscure
exploitation features, it's a wonder that even tattered prints of the films they deal with still exist). The disc also includes a pair of stupefying short subjects: an abridged version of
Horny Vampire, a mildly pornographic
horror-
comedy filmed by cult favorite
Ray Dennis Steckler about a Jewish vampire who looks for love on the Las Vegas strip, and
Midsummer Nightmare, an ancient nudie reel that shows a haggard old witch turn herself into a beautiful showgirl and then indulge in some desultory stripteasing. Neither will be edifying for anyone aside from completists. There's a handful of great trailers for vampiric double features of the past and nostalgic drive-in advertisements for concession stand treats and promotional schemes. As with other
Something Weird DVDs, the viewer can choose the option of watching the films, trailers and ads in sequence to replicate a night out at the drive-in, and they include a collection of ad mats for similar blood-curdling features. While
Something Weird has dug up wilder, more exotic documents for public consumption, fans of vampire films should be entertained by the atypical blood guzzlers on display in these otherwise unavailable films.
