Fine Tuning, Vol. 1, the first in a series showcasing pinch-hitting rhythms of
drum'n'bass, captures the riveting sound set from British DJ
Jumpin' Jack Frost. It's a mix that's lush, yet a bit rough-edged, with layered breaks and sultry ambience.
Dylan and
Ink's intense loops found on
"I Need You Now" are sophisticated, whereas
"Messiah" by
Konflict boats tight
techno cuts for a slick production.
Frost's keen ear for a strict
jungle design is right on. This compilation is funky in spots, sexy in other areas, but
Frost doesn't let it go too far. He's solid with its hypnotic delight while introducing (again) the trippy nature of one of
electronica's growing genres.
Fine Tuning, Vol. 1 is hard, and one of the album's finer moments is the sultry grooves on
Total Science's
"Jazz Note." Featuring the brashness of
house mastermind
Robert Owens,
Jumpin' Jack Frost has undoubtedly set up the cast for
drum'n'bass' hammering power on this eclectic collection.
