My House in Montmartre is a collection of some of the hottest
techno and
electronica tracks to come out of France around the turn of the century. Featuring most of the major names in the movement, the album is an excellent document of a scene that has developed a very original and entertaining take on the genre. Taking elements from both
disco and
soul music, the 14 songs featured on
My House in Montmartre showcase the musical diversity that this one particular aspect of the
techno scene can create out of a few key elements. Take
Daft Punk's remix of
"Disco Cubism" by
I Cube as an example. The track builds on offbeat pieces of the song, slowly building unlike parts from the original into a sparse
techno track that utilizes funky electric piano and
disco-esque guitar for a very unique result. Then, on the other end of the spectrum there's
Stardust's
"Music Sounds Better With You." The track is a dancefloor anthem from the get-go, delivering a thick
disco beat, a wonderfully repetitive guitar part, and some beautifully soulful vocals delivering two lines over and over in an intoxicating and hypnotic fashion. These are just two parts of the multifaceted genre of
French electronica, and with other excellent groups like
Air,
Alex Gopher, and
We in Music also contributing songs, this makes for a great party album. Anyone who enjoys one of the groups featured here who wants to hear more music like it should definitely give this a listen -- it is an accurate and interesting sampler that features several highly recommended artists performing some of their best material.
