The term "
glitch" developed a certain cachet in
electronic music circles to describe a specific form of
electronic music seemingly inspired by the sound of malfunctioning CD players. It doesn't quite cover the work of the young producer/remixer
Datach'i (
Joseph Fraioli), however, because the implications of "
glitch" as a descriptive term suggests a certainly dirtiness, a random quality that makes use of happy accidents. That doesn't describe
Datach'i, especially not on his masterful fifth full-length,
Shock Diamonds. The key to this album is its sterility: it is as immaculately, pristinely recorded as the average
Mariah Carey album, with not a sound out of place. Furthermore, the editing is similarly precise, with not a single beat out of place either. This will to perfection gives
Shock Diamonds a certain elegance even at its most rattling. And it gets pretty rattling: beats pile up and tumble over one another, colliding in harsh, unsettling ways that nevertheless have their own logic and grace.
