Akin to his labelmates
Twine,
Geoff White's
Aeroc project takes the complexities and simplicities that made
Twine's debut for
Ghostly so memorable and takes them in more accessible directions for casual listeners of the
IDM genre. Over the span of 14 tracks and etudes,
White examines a palette of quiet, dark rhythms complemented by his signature sound of warmth and sublime sense of emotional melody. Instead of letting the machines do most of the talking, he finds a sensible balance in the organic and the digital that most producers strive to achieve and rarely succeed in pulling off.
White also branches out into various directions of
dub and
Dabrye-inspired
hip-hop at points, but retains a sensible hold on composition, never letting it spiral out of control but never letting things get overly complex either.
"Viscous" is as beautiful and melodic as you'd find on a record by
Telefon Tel Aviv (check
"Mahy") or
Savath + Savalas (
"Rusted Dress Up"), its only fault being that some of the interludes drone on and are a bit unnecessary. But forgive these sins and you'll be blessed with an enjoyable listen from start to finish.
